Claude and his trusty terrier in Gooseberry Cove, Newfoundland
Since its founding in 1864, Gooseberry Cove has been a fishing community. Poor management and international factory trawling led to the fishery’s collapse in 1992. In this struggling fishery, cod quotas are extremely low. Our partners in Gooseberry Cove — Claude Seward and partner Valerie Johnson — have devised an innovative ranching system to fatten cod in captivity, yielding more pounds of cod while taking fewer fish from the ocean.
Claude catches all of his feed, targeting capelin, herring, mackerel and squid on an almost daily basis. His cod are hand fed once every 4-5 days.
Good Food Revolution “We need to move away from worrying about individual species and start looking at individual producers, like any other kind of food production.”
TRAP CAUGHT — cod of legal size are trap caught, a method with no habitat destruction or bycatch
HAND FED WHOLE FISH — Feed comes from abundant local Newfoundland stocks of capelin,
herring, squid, and mackerel. Cod feed naturally on these species
CONTROLLED CONDITIONS, EXCELLENT QUALITY — having the fish in a controlled setting allows for purging them for several days before harvest, resulting in a consistently firm fish
WIND POWERED — their home and farm operate off wind power
Cod are tended to by kayak, to keep the beloved cove clean and undisturbed
